Library Visit Tomorrow

Now that I have finished one of the files that I've had lying around for ages, I've realised that there are other Artist Books I have seen, I wonder where I've written about them.

Tomorrow I will go the State LIbrary, and look at some more.  Cunning little things that they are.

Masks of the mind

Masks of the mind by Bonnie Stahlecker

ALAAB STA  State Library Location Code

Interesting poetry that i liked & popup masks, with shiny foil sewn in, more like paper sculpture.  Signature bound, looks like hand made paper.

Tongue (lick lick)

Tongue (lick lick) by Stephen Spurrier and Wilma Tabacco.

ALAAB SPU State LIbrary Location Code

This has a pale pink furry cover, with a window in the cover, with a miniature of one of the pages
inside.

Concertina of stiff paper, and it's full of ruled lines of texta, like something I would do.
And watercolour.

There is no text, the message is in stamps and symbols, a tongue and an "=", and
heads like the stone heads in "Spirited Away" and their eyes. But i am not sure what the message is.  Whatever you can make of it.

It is quite intriguing.

Licorice Allsorts

Licorice Allsorts  by Helen Sanderson

ALAAB SAN State Library Location Code

This is a Book Object, that really does look like a seal plastic packet of licorice allsorts, with a ingredient label on it.

The licorice blocks are actually little books that I can open up when I squish the plastic bag.

I think they are offcuts from the printing process heat sealed in plastic.  Very clever and cute, and they made to smile.

Sensa and the Glat-to : an ordinary story

Sensa and the Glat-to : an ordinary story by Joan Prickard,

ALAAB PIC State Library Location Code

oh, but there's nothing ordinary about this.  Someone went right down into the Depths of their Dreaming Mind to dig up this story.

The story of living and dying, told in the Universal Language, that it could be about you
or me.  Being born, the before, the passing over. Before passing over.

Told in Signatures of handmade paper, that looks like marshmallow and lollies, with a fluffy sea, and fuzzy butterflies.

would love to see this one again. In a box with a clasp.

Ex libris: soliloquy on life and death

Ex libris: soliloquy on life and death by Alan Owen

ALAAB OWE State Library Location Code

I seem to think I've seen this one like in a dream or a past life.

Fascinating!  It's a giant block of wood, and it looks like a computer. It's got a keyboard painted onto it, and it's title, and the "monitor" is a giant block of resin.  And it's painted like an apple monitor, and then embedded in the resin are the pages of a book.  Old decayed pages, and the decay looks like compost, all embedded in the resin.  The resin is smooth and cold, and i want to lick it. It must weigh a couple of kilograms. I love it.

The Art of the Cake: Paris Patisseries

The Art of the Cake: Paris Patisseries by Rita Erlich and Mary Newsome

ALAAB NEW State Library Location Code

There is a patron saint of pastry cooks!

The book is in a cake box, as though it is a cake.  It's got a pair of white gloves in the box, with a little baggie to put your cakey in.

The front cover looks like a slab of chocolate! Concertina style. Some of the pictures are of cakes that are computer printed onto the paper, from hand paintings, probably watercolours and some photographs printed onto the the paper.  and some popups.

When I left the Library and this book, I went to get a Piece of Cake!

Four shells, or Foreshores

Four shells, or Foreshores by Jenny McDuff

ALAAB MACD State Library Location Code

This one is SPECIAL!  The cover is a watercolour picture of the Foreshore.

Each page looks like an oil painting.   Great globs of impasto, golden, ochre and umber, with lines of sea colours running through it.  Just like an artist book should be, there are no words.  I can't draw them!

Hardcover, bound as folios sewn in.

I would look at this one again.

Little Hole

Little Hole by Ron McBurnie & Fred Pohlmnn

ALAAB MACB State Library Location Code

Concertina of almost square pages folded into triangles and stuck together.  The Linoprints that look like ink, not bound, but stuck to leather bound endboards.

It seems to tell the story of man & his tools, or how man came to destroy himself

Artwork of the Artist Books.

Now That I'm a bit more familiar with this blogging environment, I can see how I can update this entries at a later date, with pictures.  I intend to add pictures of the Books that I've drawn, as I don't want to even think about the kinds of trouble I could get into if I add photos of the Books to this blog.

Some of the Artist Books have been photographed by the State Library, and they can be viewed from the Catalogue.  This blog is intentioned as a Taster, to give you some incentive to go the Library to look at the real Artist Books.

Doggery

Doggery by mcburnie

ALAAB MACB  State Library Location Code

a cute little number of funny pictures of dogs, looks like white paint on a black background, folded

paper squares glued together, not bound

Sing, weaving / poem and Elements

Sing, weaving / poem and Elements  by Judith Haswell

ALAAB HAS State Library Location Code

A dainty little thing with a cunning "ribbon" binding, but the "ribbon" is actually three strands of
paper woven together and binding all the pages together.  Pages are made of card. It stands up by itself.

It contains a poem, with a phrase on each page.Elements is a separate book, which is a quote from Physics by Empedocles about 450 BC.  Back when physics wasn't really science, but more like poetry.

As a scientist and a poet, I find that quote quite fascinating.

Plastic Surgery

Plastic Surgery by Guan Wei

ALAAB GUA State Library Location Code

This is a concertina book, with end blocks not joined together, concertina is glued into the end
blocks.  It's cover is padded, and covered in satin, with kanji glued onto the cover.

I like it, the pictures are amusing and tell a story of heads, that look like they could be screenprinted, or water colour painted onto drawn graphs, with stamps and stickers and fingerprints, and eyes and mouth and nose collaged on. With the message "This is not art."

Emmas Umbrella

Emmas umbrella by Kate Dickson

ALAAB DIC State Library Location Code

ah this is funny, and fun to follow the story line through the book.  it is a story in pictures of what happened  to Emma's Umbrella

A3 colour prints of places in Brisbane & each one has an umbrella attached to it with wire & the umbrella can be dragged across the page as though the umbrella is being blown along by the wind, until it is blown into space & it passes by an alien.

Fun for the whole family.

Sound and Flight of the currawong

Sound and Flight of the currawong by Wim de Vos

ALAAB DEV State Library Location Code

This is a cunning little box.  With the print plates in it.  With the book.  Pictures of the curawong's eye view of the landscape.  The prints have embossing on each paper that could be a river or the path of the currawong. Bound with thread.

Thymelaeaceae papers

Thymelaeaceae papers by Ruth Creedy and Heather J. McDonald

ALAAB CRE State Library Location Code

A lovely little book, with a variety of different hand made papers in it. 20 different shades of brown.  It's delightful to browse through the papers and see all the different textures. Each plant has made a different kind of paper!  All from the different Thyme plants, all plants made paper with different textures.

Then the are some pages of transluscent computer paper with the story of how the pages and the book came about.  Pictures of the flowering plants are printed onto translucent computer paper.

I want to eat this book.

Wild Cherry Tin Mine

Wild Cherry Tin Mine by Darren Bryant et al

ALAAB COD State Library Location Code

Nice hand made black paper.  Black printed maps onto black paper for an interesting effect of not being able to quite read it. Torn edges, and some scrapbooking of map scraps onto the pages.  No story or text, just the scrapbooked art. Some pages have the design word for "deckled" onto the paper.  Design is made into the paper in different layers.  White paper pulp piled onto the black paper in a design of text and map. I don't if I've ever seen that before.

No Diving

No Diving by Peter E. Charuk

ALAAB CHA  is the location code within the State Library.

The first thing I notice about this book is the strange print.  It's made of full colour digital prints, and it feels gritty under my gloves.  Full of beautiful blue water and orange things.  Complementary colours, a goldfish, a woman bathing. Concertina folds. The only text is a poem by Leonard Cohen, Suzanne, at the end.  Concertina is glued into the hard covers.

Artist Book

<Artist Book> by Pierre Cavalan
ALAAB CAV is it's location code at the State Library

SUCH A BEAUTIFUL THING!  Made of cut-outs of tins! Oil tins, Danish shortbread tins, and a Christmas fruit cake tin? Links welded together. The cover is made of something that looks like wood.  A shiny metal badge of books is riveted onto the cover.  It mades a satisfying chunking sound of page on page.

Will definitely look at this one again.

Erupting Volcano

Erupting Volcano  by Lorraine M Brown
ALAAB BRO is it's location code, in the QLD State Library Catalogue.

Basically a book object that looks like an erupting volcano.  Out standing.  I had to lift it out of it's little box, and look at it from all sides.   Multi coloured leaves of paper to represent the lava, grey black orange, yellow-orange, red with the satin ribbons, the lava leaves are folios glued to the binding, folios and ribbons are covered with an end paper.  Black volcano box is made of book binders, and cloth covered board and marbled fly sheet.

I would definitely look at this one again.
